Katie’s Mistake

Young Katie had a problem. Her love for her father had caused her to make a horrible mistake. She had told some friends at school about a very unflattering remark that her father had made about Senator Englehart, and this might cause the insurance bill to not be passed. Katie had told her school friends that her father the governor said that “if Senator Englehart’s brain were put into a bird it would fly backwards”. To make matters worse, Katie had kept it a secret and had caused a lot of trouble for a lot of people. Word of the governor’s remark spread quickly across the school, into the neighborhood, into the ears of a newspaper reporter, and had eventually ended up in the newspaper for all to see.

When the governor’s aides and finally the governor himself found out they believed they had “a leak” in the governor’s mansion. That remark could have only been leaked to a reporter by someone close to the governor, someone who heard the governor say it. The governor’s top aide, Taylor, resolved to find the leak and fire him or her immediately. When Katie heard them talking about it she remained silent and let a lot of people get in trouble. Ms. Kraus, the mansion cook, was accused of being the leak and was fired. People were fearing for their jobs and spying on each other while little Katie, who knew the truth, never said a word. Katie not speaking up wreaked havoc on the governor’s mansion. All the while, Katie remained silent and allowed it all to unfold.

Katie had resolved not to tell her father about being the leak, but Benson had caught her and convinced her to tell the truth. When Ms. Kraus had been “convicted” and asked to leave, Katie had made a note out of letters she cut out of one of her books. The note simply said, “Kraus did not do it”. Each letter was cut out neatly, and Benson recognized the letters as he always helped little Katie with her homework. Benson had convinced Katie that she would feel better by telling her father and taking whatever punishment he felt was right than she would by having to live with all her guilt. Katie knew how her father felt about lying and covering up the truth, and she was already practicing rubbing her backside.
