I would imagine anything handcrafted could get that expensive, too, especially if it's made using a very limited raw material. I know Ian has made some things out of a very rare peice of antique machine belt leather, and other people are known for exotic wood paddles.

Leather implements -- particularly handcrafted ones, as aurora suggests -- are quite expensive. If you're skeptical, just check some prices on quirts, floggers and bullwhips.

While it was given to us as a gift, our Canadian prison strap - quite substantial in size and make - cost well over $100.

Some on here have see it real life, and can attest to both the size and the degree of careful work to craft it.
